The Classes
Classes are taught via Google Meet.
We begin the class by practicing numbers, dates, prices, and a tongue twister.
Next, we start reading an article, a book, or something similar.
One or two paragraphs; I will ask you if you have any questions about any words.
Then, I will read the paragraphs.
And then, the next person will read one or two paragraphs.
At the end of the class, there will be time for a general conversation.
If an article is read, a copy will be made available to all students in Google Docs for future review, with the notes taken in class.
The Science
There are five parts of our brains directly used in creating language.
My method is to ignore the two parts used to create meaning, and focus on the three parts involved in mechanically creating the sounds.
Meaning will come afterward more easily.
And once you know how to accurately replicate the sound, you will be able to hear it better as well.
Wernicke's Area: assigns meaning to words.
Broca's Area: language planning center. Organize the ideas you want to express through language.
Angular Gyrus: allows us to associate a perceived word with different images, sensations, and ideas.
Arcuate Fasciculus: The arcuate fasciculus is a band of nerves that connects Wernicke's area and Broca's area. It helps you form words, speak clearly, and understand concepts in the form of language.
Cerebellem: Located at the back of the brain, the cerebellum is involved in coordinating voluntary muscle movements, such as opening and closing the mouth, moving the arms and legs, standing upright, and maintaining balance. It also controls language processing.
We focus on developing the cerebellum, the arcuate fasciculus, and Broca's area; Wernicke's area and the angular gyrus develop naturally over time, allowing for a greater understanding of the letter-sound structure and more accurate reproduction of the appropriate sounds.
Attendance Policy
If you miss a class and do not give at least 2 hours' notice, you will not be able to schedule classes for one month.
The second time this happens, you will not be able to schedule classes for three months.
Scheduling is managed through a series of applications and procedures; if you are interested in learning about technology, I would be happy to talk to you about these kinds of topics.
